5 Amusement Park Safety Tips

Amusement parks in Myrtle Beach are fun for tourists and locals alike. However, they can also be dangerous. In 2016, there were 30,000 injuries requiring emergency room visits in the United States that occurred at carnivals or amusement parks.

Children do not always recognize potential dangers at amusement parks, especially while preoccupied with the fun they are having. As a parent, it is your responsibility to watch out for your children’s safety. The following tips can help:

1. Plan an exit strategy

Before you even go into the park, you should have a strategy for getting out quickly and safely in the event of inclement weather or another unexpected adverse event. Communicate this plan to your children before you go.

2. Wear appropriate clothing

Avoid any clothing that is too loose or baggy that could get caught in a ride’s mechanical equipment. Choose shoes that fit snugly on the feet and are unlikely to come off. Avoid flip-flops.

3. Double-check safety restraints

Employees of the park or carnival usually check the latches, bars, belts, straps, etc. that restrain patrons during a ride before starting it up. However, you can and should check these restraints yourself. You cannot be too careful.

4. Speak up with concerns

If you observe potentially dangerous behavior from an employee, such as not enforcing safety rules or talking on a cell phone, report it. Encourage your children to speak up as well if they observe behavior that makes them uncomfortable.

5. Be careful around water

Be aware of your child’s swimming ability if you are visiting a water park. Children who are not strong swimmers should definitely wear a life vest at a water park. It does not hurt to have children who are strong swimmers wear them as well. Water parks often have these available for free for families to borrow.

Perhaps the most important amusement park safety tip is to follow the rules. This applies to you as well as your children. Do not make things harder on park employees by asking them to bend age or height requirements for your child. Those regulations are in place for a reason. Lead by example by following the rules to the letter.
