General Motors Issues Fire Related Recall

General Motors has issued another recall in relation to vehicles that can leak and catch fire.

This is the third time in the past seven years for this type of recall. This time around, the recall covers approximately 1.4 million vehicles. This recall was necessary because repairs stemming from the earlier recalls did not fix the issue.

According to General Motors, more than 1,300 vehicles caught fire despite the fact that they were fixed by dealerships.

After safety regulators became aware of the problem in 2007, the previous recalls occurred in 2008 and 2009. In 2008 alone, the company noted that nearly 300 cars caused fires, with at least 17 leading to a burnt structure.

The most recent recall, which impacts vehicles primarily in North America, includes the following models:

- 1998 to 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

- 1998 and 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue and Chevrolet Lumina

- 2000 to 2004 Chevrolet Impala

- 1997 to 2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix

According to reports, a valve cover gasket can degrade, allowing oil to escape. The oil can then reach the exhaust manifold, thus leading to the potential for a fire.

A spokesman for the company is worried about more than consumers, noting the following: "Since we have not decided on the remedy, we do not know whether the cost will result in a material charge to earnings."

Once again, General Motors finds itself in the news for all the wrong reasons. Anybody with one of the vehicles mentioned in the recall should be aware of the trouble and do whatever it takes to avoid a disaster.
