In Hot Weather, Good Tires Can Prevent an Accident

In-Hot-Weather,-Good-Tires-Can-Prevent-an-Accident-ImageProper tire maintenance is important for gas mileage but it can also help you avoid an auto accident. As people spend more time driving on the highways and the weather is hotter, tires are under greater pressure to perform. By keeping your tires properly maintained, you can be sure to enjoy your summer while reducing your risk of an accident.According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, tire failure causes about 11,000 crashes every single year. These accidents are due to tread separations, bad tires, under-inflation, and blowouts. At least some of these accidents are preventable. The trouble with tires is especially pronounced in summer months. The hotter temperatures can contribute to tire breakdown and increase the risk of tire failure, according to the NHTSA. So, if you are going to pay extra attention to your tires, now is the time to do it.Proper tire pressure, for instance, not only increases gas mileage by up to 3.3%, but improves stopping ability, load carrying capability, and steering. For this reason, the NHTSA recommends you “follow the recommended tire pressure in pounds-per-square-inch (PSI) for your vehicle. This information is found on the vehicle placard typically inside the car door and in the vehicle owner’s manual.”Keep a tire pressure gauge inside your vehicle. Not all filling stations have a pressure gauge. Having your own gives you no excuse for not checking your pressure at least once each month. To make sure your tires aren’t too worn for the road, replace them as directed. Monitor the tread. If you have less than 2/32 of an inch of tread, it’s time for new tires. Tires also have tread wear indicators, or raised sections in the bottom of the tread grooves. When these are visible, it’s another sign that your tires are due for replacement.Proper tire maintenance is a relatively simple chore, and one that could save you from a serious accident. Taking the time to ensure your tires are road-worthy is easy and if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, ask a mechanic or friend to look at your tires.Though you do everything you can to prevent an accident, some accidents are beyond your control. Other drivers may not be as responsible. If you’ve been involved in a serious accident that wasn’t your fault, let the accident lawyers of Maguire help.
